Walks in and around Ravenshead.

Short walks

#1: "Short Circuit" (1 mile; 25 mins)

Leavine shopping precinct, turning right at Post Office. Go up steps and and cross the back road into Milton Crescent. A few steps further, cross road to enter jitty which leads down to Church Drive. Go straight across Church Drive, go right for a few yards and turn left into Swinton Rise. Follow Swinton Rise, crossing over road at some point, until Southview Gardens is reached. Turn right into Southview Gardens and go down to jitty which leads to Milton Crescent. Cross to Milton Drive and follow it round to return to shopping precinct.

#2: "A Halfway Half?" (1 1/2 miles; 35 mins)

Leaving shopping precinct, turning right at Post Office. Go up steps and cross the back road into Milton Crescent. A few steps further, cross road to enter jitty which leads down to Church Drive. Turn right into Church Drive and follow the road down to its end at the Sherwood Ranger. (Depending on time of day, refreshments can be obtained.) Turn right into Chapel Lane and, taking care as there is no pavement, go uphill and turn right into Vernon Crescent. Follow Vernon Crescent back to the shopping presinct.

#3: "The Three Jitties Walk" (1 3/4 miles; 45 mins)

From the presinct follow Milton Drive. At Sheepwalk Lane turn right. Follow Sheepwalk Lane until it intersects with Main Road (don't forget to look for the Pilgrim.) There is a seat at the intersection, for use if it is sunny. Turn right onto Main Road and turn right again up to Swinton Rise. Turn left into Haddon Road. Go along road to nearly the end and turn right into Tideswell Cl. Go right to the top and through the jitty onto Swinton Rise. Cross over, down Southview Gardens and through the jitty to Church Drive. Cross over and go through jitty number 3 to Milton Crescent. Then go straight on to the shopping presinct. This walk is a bit, erm, up and down.

#4: "Treasure Trail" (2 miles; 45 mins)

Leaving shopping presinct, turning right at Post Office. Go up steps and cross the back road into Milton Crescent. A few steps further, cross road to enter the jitty which leads down to Church Drive. Go straight across Church Drive, go right for a few yards and turn left into Swinton Rise. Go uphill and turn left into Summercourt Drive. Go down Summercourt Drive, noting Cambourne Gardens on the left. Continue down Summercourt, crossing the road, and turn right into Woodside Gardens. Follow this road (which becomes Haddon Road) to its end and turn left into Hereford road. Go down Hereford to Bretton Road and bear left down to Main Road.

Turn right into Main Road and go along until Chapel Lane is reached. The Little John Pub is situated on the other side of this stretch of road. Turn right into Chapel Lane and follow road uphill. Just after the crest of the hill and a left bend take a jitty on the right through to Cheriton Road. Cross Cheriton Road and go right for a few steps. Turn left into a jitty which leads to Bourne Drive. Cross the bottom of this cul-de-sac and take another jitty through to Denbury road. Turn left into Denbury Road and descend the hill to Church Drive. Cross Church Drive and bear left to Mavis Avenue. Go up Mavis Avenue to its end and turn right into Vernon Crescent.

#5: "The Dog Owners' Walk" (2 1/4 miles; 1 hr)

From the presinct go along Vernon Crescent and just before Longdale Avenue turn right into the jitty leading to Gorse Hill. At Longdale Lane intersection cross over into Regina Crescent, keep left at the island and turn left into the jitty at the top, leading to the leisure centre. Go through the gate and take a sharp left onto a woodland path alongside the bowling green. At the field edge follow the path that goes diagonally to the drive. Cross over. Follow the diagnoal path to the wood edge. Go on, path facing. Follow main path to Kighill Garage (refreshments!).

Walk up Chapel Lane, taking care to walk facing the traffic. At the top of the hill there is a good view of Blidworth Church and, when I did the walk, of Pig City. Turn left into Chestnut Avenue, then right into Priory Avenue and then left through the jitty into Oakwood Drive. Keep straight on till Longdale Avenue is reached then turn right by the doctors and then left at Vernon Crescent. Follow round, passing the Village Hall, till the presinct is reached. Don't forget your poop-a-scroop on this walk of a man's best friend is with you.

Longer walks

#1: 'Newstead Abbey Walk' (3 3/4 miles; 1 1/2 hours. Or, if Abbey visited, 4 1/4 miles; 1 3/4 hours)

Walk to the west end of the presinct and along Milton Drive. Turn right at Sheepwalk Lane and walk along intersection with Main Road. Seat available. Look out for the Pilgrim on LHS on the way down. Turn left and walk up to the traffic lights. Magnificent Lions on the left, Donkey's on the right. By the traffic lights there is a larch farm (refreshments!). Cross onto Kirkby Road and walk along to FP on the left just after number 51. Note on LHS 5 Gargoyles and a house with its lawn on the roof.

On the RHS there is a good view of Thieves Wood. Turn left up the path which eventually goes up the new housing estate built on the site of the old Fever Hostpital. There is a seat here to rest and admire the view. The path then goes into woodland and climbs 18 steps before dropping down to Newstead Abbey Drive. Another seat on the way. If desired to see Newstead Abbey turn RH down the drive, a 10 minute walk each way. At the Abbey there is a lake with wild fowl, a shop with refreshments, toilets and the Abbey itself.

LH up the drive along the grass verge on the right hand side there is yet another seat. When the verge disappears just before a RH bend, on the right, there is a woodland path which winds its way up to meet the drive again just before the gates. A fee may be required on leaving Abbey grounds. Cross the road opposite the gates and on the LHS there is a path indicated St Peter's Church. This brings you out onto Sheepwalk Lane. Turn right then first left and the presinct is straight ahead.

#2: 'Quarter Marathon' (6 1/2 miles; 2 1/2 hours)

Warning: Take great care crossing the A60, twice

Leaving shopping presint past Post Office. Go straight across to Milton Drive and go on junction with Sheepwalk Lane. Go right into Sheepwalk and go to its juntion with Main Road. Turn left and go to traffic lights at Larch Farm. Take care - there are no pedestrian lights. Go straight on to Kirkby Road. There is a pavement on the north (Mansfield) side of the road. Proeed along to a signed footpath on the left, just after number 51, re-crossing if the pavement side has been used.

Follow this footpath across unused land, past new housing, past fields and through woodland until the driveway from Newstead Abbey gates to the Abbey itself is reached. Limbs can be rested on the way as there are benches. Cross the drive and follow the signed footpath until a road is reached. Bear left onto this road and go straight ahead. There may be a flock of black sheep to be seen in a field to the right. Keep straight on until the road becomes a track using a path alongside a gated area. Continue along the track towards Papplewick Village. On the outskirts of the village a few houses and a farm are passed.

The track leads onto a road, Blidworth Waye. Turn left into Blidworth and almost immediately cross the road and take a footpath. This path goes through woodland to the side of the road and finishes back at the road. Walk on the roadside verge for a short distance until a right turn leads you to a field path passing very close to a pylon. Follow the path with the field to the left, passing another pylon. Turn left at the corner of the field and follow the path going into woodland. Keep following this path until joining a track. Cross the track and take the signed path.

This path leads to the A60 at Kighill. Cross the A60 to Kighill Lan. At busy times, because of the bend in the road, it may be safer to go left on the A60 to the end of the bus stop lay-by before crossing. Do take care - some drivers have a strange interpretation of the 50mph speed limit. Go down Kighill Lane and turn left onto Longdale Lane. Go up Longdale until Gorse Hill is reached on the right. Go up Gorse Hill and take the jitty to Vernon Crescent. Turn left onto Vernon and return to the shopping presinct. If required, repeat 3 more times to approximately achieve a marathon distance.

#3 'The Steeplechase Walk' (6 miles; 2 1/2 hours)

Warning: There are 13 stiles on this walk. Only for the agile.

From the presinct follow Vernon Crescent past the Village Hall, past the Eco House and turn right through the jitty into Gorse Hill just before Longdale Avenue. Note the 2 pussycats on the right before joining Longdale Lane. Turn left and walk to the Chapel Lane intersection. Take the footpath opposite up over the fields. At the top, by the concrete bunker, there is an exellent view of Blidworth Church and, when I did this walk, of Pig City. Pass by the Sub Station and drop down to Fish Pool Road. Turn right, cross road to Blidworth Bottoms and take the footpath 100m on the right across the fields.

Keep striaght on over several fields, through the allotments and to the Blidworth-Blidworth Bottoms road. Turn left up into Blidworth and at the Main Road by the Black Bull (refreshments!) turn left. Pass the Bird in Hand (refreshments!) and to the church (St Mary's - well worth a visit). By the front porch there is a garden of rest in which there is a miniature church and if you walk through the gate into the main church yard then the grave directly front of you is said to be Will Scarlett's (Why did Robin Hood only rob the rich? Because the poor had no money!)

After the church a short way along the road turn right up Rickets Lane. Pass 3 houses and take the stile on the left through the house garden. Follow the path over several stiles till you pass a 3-bar fence at the end of which watch for the concealed stile on the right. Follow the path up and over the numerous stiles. Look out for a big stone on the right with a hole in the middle. Avoid the horses until you come to Sandy Lane. Turn left onto Main Road then right passing the Little John (refreshments!). You're on the home straight now. Turn left into Bretton Road, right into Hereford and proeed up the hill. Turn right into Haddon Road, left into Tideswell Close to the top and take the jitty to Swinton Rise. Turn right and follow the road round until the intersection with Church Drive. Cross and go up jitty.

How fit are you?

How long you take to compete your walk can indicate how fit you are. These times are all for walking on level ground:

Time over 1 mile (mins) 30 25 20 15 13.3 12
Speed (mph) 2 2.4 3 4 4.5 5

It may be helpful to remember the number of calories used walking! One digestive biscuit contains 50 calories.

Weight (stones) 8 9.5 11 12.5 14 15.5
Calories used over 1 mile 64 79 93 107 120 136

The chart below shows how walking speeds, on flat ground, can be used as a rough guide to fitness: (VF = very fit; F = fit; JF = just fit; UF = unfit)

Walk speed (mph) Walking fast but not out of breath
Men Women Under 40 40-55 55-65 65-75 75+

>> Historical notes

[] The shopping precinct was built in the early 1960s and the Post Office opened in 1966. [] Swinton Rise is named after Herbert Swinton who moved to the area from Hucknall about 1930 and developed large areas of land off Sheepwalk Lane. [] All the mature pine trees in Church Drive were planted by Vera Cox (nee Swinton), daughter of Herbert Swinton. [] The Sherwood Ranger opened in 1971, the name reflecting the close connection of the district with the former Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry. [] Vernon Crescent was named after Vernon, the only child of Mr and Mrs William Dovey, who died from polio at the age of 2. William Dovey bought much of the land at the south end of Sheepwalk Lane and on Longdale Lane, and built a number of the earliest houses here between 1930 and 1936. [] Cambourne Gardens: Whilst clearing the land for housing here in 1966, workmen found the Fishpool Gold Hoard. It was the biggest find of gold coins ever in Britain, comprising 1237 coins and also 4 rings, 4 pieces of jewellery and 2 lengths of chain. These treasures were hidden between winter 1463 and summer 1464, during the Wars of the Roses. [] The Little John pub was build about 1837 by Rowland Ward, a Blidworth draper and farmer. [] Chapel Lane is named after the United Free Methodist Chapel, built 1864 and demolished 1960. The church stood where house number 12 now is. [] At number 40 Chapel Lane is the Slaney Stone, recording the death on 24th January 1893 of John Slaney of Longdale Farm.
